  2. What is a food allergy? • Food allergy is an immune system reaction that occurs soon after eating a certain food. Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms.

  3. Possible Causes • Peanuts • Eggs • Milk • Shellfish • Soy • Tree nuts • Wheat

  4. Symptoms • Hives • Wheezing • Diarrhea • Difficulty swallowing • Itching • Congestion • Runny Nose • Swelling • Shortness of breath • Stomach cramps • Vomiting

  5. Thesis • Many actions are being done to reduce the effects of allergic reactions and prevent further ones.

  6. Government • Food Allergen Labeling and consumer Protection Act of 2004- this act now requires that labels must clearly identify the food source names of the major food allergens. • Now when people read the labels they know for sure which major food allergens are in the food. They are now taught to stay away from them.

  7. Schools • As of right now there are no federal food management guidelines for schools • Some schools are taking matters into their own handsby putting in protocols and policies for kids with allergies. • School administrators, custodians, and bus drivers were taught how to manage common allergic attacks

  8. Infants • If one parent has allergies there is a 48% chance the infant will also have allergies • If both parents do then that raises to 70% • A way to prevent allergies is based on the cleanliness in which we raise the kids. • A way to test for allergies is to introduce a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and meat between 6 months and a year

  9. Rechecking Allergies • Many people believe that they have a food allergy, but they don’t know for sure • The only way to find out is through an oral challenge where the subject eats certain food and see if they react • If a severe allergy occurs you must use an Epipen. Buys time before a EMS can arrive

  10. Cartoon • Peanuts are a very common allergy in America • This has caused most products to say whether they contain peanuts or not • Making fun of the fact that most foods now need to show that they may contain peanuts so they don’t get in trouble

  11. Rhetorical Devices • Appeal to reason • Loaded words • Appeal to emotion • Tone- informative • Diction
