Scholarships News • New Industrial Innovation Scholarships (IIS) program for students registered at a Quebec university • Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS) applicants are no longer required to request tenure abroad • Engineering Committee 175 has now been split into two new committees: Committee 193 and Committee 194 • Not-for-profit partners may now be considered eligible for the Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) and Industrial R&D Fellowships (IRDF) programs

Scholarships News (continued) • New collaborating companies will now be required to submit an Application for Eligibility of Organizations to Participate in all NSERC industrial scholarships programs to determine their eligibility (Form 183B) • The National Research Council Canada (NRC) is no longer participating in the Visiting Fellowships program • Separate programs aimed at women and Aboriginal persons will be developed following the final University Faculty Awards (UFA) competition in 2008

PDF Information • $40,000 per year for up to 2 years • Award start date: between April 1 and January 15 • Eligibility • If PhD was completed after Oct. 15th, 2005 OR • If all PhD requirements met by Dec. 31st, 2008 • Submit • Form 200 + Official Academic Transcripts (Doctoral Only) May only apply twice

Industrial R&D Fellowships (IRDF) • Research at eligible Canadian company • Apply within 5 years of PhD • Submit • Form 200 (Application for a Scholarship or Fellowship) • Form 183C (Nomination for an Industrial R&D Fellowship) • Not previously employed in Canadian industry after PhD for more than six months • $40,000 min/year for maximum of 24 months *Eligible companies on our Web site

IRDF Selection Process • Eligible companies submit their application at any time throughout the year • NSERC program staff reviews application for completeness • Two members of the College of Reviewers review the application and complete an evaluation • The members separately assess the merit of the candidate and the research proposal • To be successful, both the candidate and the research proposal must be meritorious • Companies are notified of the decision within six weeks of receiving the complete application

  19. Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories (VF) • Research in government setting • 1 year fellowship renewable twice • Apply within 5 years of completing PhD • No deadlines for application • $43,724 per year *No citizenship or residency requirements

  20. VF: Selection Process • Evaluation of applications by government department, overseen by NSERC • If successful, applicant is placed on an inventory for up to 2 yrs • Being placed on the inventory does not guarantee a fellowship • Government departments select candidates from the inventory

Northern Research Internships • You may hold a USRA, CGS/PGS, IPS or PDF at the same time • Easy application process: • No fixed deadlines, apply 8 weeks before start of northern work • Up to 30 awards per year (first come, first served) • Submit Form 200, Letters from supervisor, Northern partner and signed NRINT Agreement covering: • University's $ commitment • University supervisor = NSERC grantee • Northern partner’s $ or in-kind commitment • Intellectual property rights • No delay in degree due to confidentiality issues

  24. Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Postdoctoral Fellowships(JSPS) • 382,000 Yen (approx. $3,600 CAN) per month + travel and relocation allowances • Research in Japanese universities and national labs • Maximum 24 months of support • Obtained PhD within past 6 years • Deadline January 2008 • Contact NSERC for application forms

University Faculty Awards (UFA) • Female or Aboriginal doctoral graduates • $40,000 salary contribution for 5 years maximum • Must be offered tenured or tenure-track position and nominated by host university • Must be successful in the Discovery Grants competition before proceeding to the UFA competition Deadline: November 1, 2007
