  2. Objectives • Define “renaissance” • Explain the characteristics of Renaissance art • Apply knowledge of the characteristics by identifying their use in an example from the period • Recognize important artists/work of the period

  3. “Rebirth” of art and learning • Italy wanted to bring back the classical learning of ancient Greece and Rome • 1300 – 1600 AD

  5. Merchant Class Dominated Society • Wealth was earned through business, not inherited by nobles • Medici Family was a powerful banking family in Florence, Italy • Cosimo de Medici – the wealthiest European controlled the city-state of Florence

  6. Characteristics of Renaissance Art • Perspective ( three dimensions) • Individualism - Human Body, facial expression • Religious subjects (Madonna with child) • Nature • Realism in detail and color

  15. Leonardo DaVinci • Painter, Sculptor, Scientist • “Mona Lisa.” Believed to be an image of Lisa Gherardini (1503) Wife of a wealthy businessman from Florence named Francesco del Giocondo. It’s Italian name, “La Gioconda.”

  16. Some people think the Mona Lisa was DaVinci’s self portrait as a woman; this idea, while interesting is considered not likely by experts
