  2. Inheritance • DMD is a sex-linked disorder that most commonly appears in young boys. • DMD is caused from a mutated X chromosome from the mother which causes Dystrophin to stop being produced.

  3. Symptoms • When dystrophin stops being produced leg and pelvic muscles are severely weakened over time. • Symptoms progressively appear after birth such as trouble walking and running as well as difficulty getting up.

  4. Prognosis • Unfortunately the prognosis for DMD isn't good. Life expectancy is usually around 25 years old because DMD can lead to a disease that affects the lungs.

  5. treatment/research • There is no actual cure for DMD but thanks to research done by the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) there are some treatments to slow the progression. http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/md/md.htm

  6. Dealing with DMD • Several support groups are available that can help with the burden of having DMD or the DMD of a loved one. One such group can be found here http://www.mdjunction.com/duchenne-muscular-dystrophy • Here is the inspiring story of Jared Aronson, a young t-shirt designer with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: http://www.mdjunction.com/duchenne-muscular-dystrophy
