  3. Human Characteristics • 550 million people – including: • Indigenous peoples • China & Tibet Khmers Mons Malays • Indian & Chinese influences • Looking for spices Hinduism Buddhism • Islamic influence • Western colonization • Almost the whole region controlled by Europe – except Thailand

  4. Population Growth • Population Density • Population Growth Rates • Cambodia: Population Decline • Between 1975 and 1979, Cambodia lost 38% of its people as a result of harsh rule by the Khmer Rouge communist government.

  5. Migrations Movement to Cities Outward Migrations From the 1970s to the 1990s, thousands of people left the region to escape economic and political problems. Negative effect of migration? • Major population shift villages  cities • Some Southeast Asian countries have primate cities. Bangkok & Jakarta • Thailand’s government has offered people financial incentives to leave Bangkok and move back to villages • Indonesia has done the same.

  10. Forms of Government • Indonesia, Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore = democratic republics • Myanmar = military government • Brunei, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand = constitutional monarchies. • Laos & Vietnam = communist
