  1. halloween By Monica and Jaime

  2. Where does Halloween come from? • Halloween began as an ancient Celtic festival in Great Britain and Ireland, and has survived most strongly among Irish, Scottish and Welsh communities. Immigrants from these communities carried the tradition to North America where it has gained in popularity. In turn, as part of American pop culture, Halloween has spread in popularity

  3. When is Halloween celebrated? • Hallows Evening is on October 31st

  4. What is the origin of the word Halloween? • The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day.5 Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (ealra hālgena mæssedæg, mass-day of all saints), All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested until 1556.5

  5. Name some Halloween traditions • Haunted attractions • Dess up as witches, skeletons, mosnters, etc. • Celebrate Halloween parties • Eat special food • Make jack o lanterns

  6. What is a Jack-o-lantern? • A jack-o'-lantern is typically a carved pumpkin. It is associated chiefly with the holiday of Halloween and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called ignis fatuusor jack-o'-lantern. In a jack-o'-lantern, typically the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out; an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved onto the outside surface, and the lid replaced. At night, a light is placed inside to illuminate the effect.

  7. what is trick or treat? • Trick or Treat, is a Hallowe'en custom in both England and the US, where kids go round to people's houses on Hallowe'en night, dressed in some kind of costume, and challenge the inhabitants with the cry, "Trick or Treat?" The householder then chooses between a trick -- having some kind of practical joke played on them by the kids -- or buys their way out of their predicament with a treat, a sweet or piece of fruit or something of that ilk.

  8. Explain a game played In Halloween • Trick or treat: on Halloween children go from house to house asking for candy

  9. Show some  typical food for Halloween • Because the holiday comes in the wake of the annual apple harvest, candy apples (known as toffee apples outside North America), caramel or taffy apples are common Halloween treats made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup, sometimes followed by rolling them in nuts.

  10. happy halloween!!!
