  1. Family and Consumer Science Curriculum Study 2003-2005

  2. Family and Consumer Science • Looked at other school programs • Compared LHS to national standards • Surveyed local businesses • Reflected on our own program

  3. Family and Consumer Science • Supports academics with practical application • Math skills • Vocabulary and word recognition • Practical organizational skills

  4. Family and Consumer Science Expands student experiences for careers with children, youth and the food industry

  5. FACS: Update program documents As a result of the research…. • Vision • Mission • Learner Outcomes (Appendix II)

  6. FACS: Our Future Vision In a perfect world … • Middle School Sampling at 7 & 8 • 9-12 offerings in all program areas • Facility with two separate spaces - kitchens and classroom

  7. FACS: Our Mission … to develop high school graduates who are - happy - responsible Self-sufficient Consumer savvy Self confident And able to make smart choices in all areas of their lives

  8. FACS: New Facility • Thank you! • One kitchen will be handicapped accessible • Better air circulation and heating for the room

  9. FACS: New Facility • Referendum is great for many programs, but not so great for FACS. Concerns: • Dated orange & yellow cabinets will remain as is • Loss of storage space • Loss of kitchen for doorway to office • Still have a combined classroom and kitchen facility rahter than a separate classroom for instruction and projects

  10. FACS: Upgrade equipment/texts • Within the facility, we stay current with budget constraints: • Purchased new texts (all texts are post-1997) • Replaced range in 04-05 • We still need to: • Replace the refrigerator • Technology tools • Dishwasher

  11. FACS: Eighth Grade Program • Students don’t have full exposure to all areas of FACS • Better for the 8th grade than study hall • Consumer & Family Resources • Parenting Topics • Personal/family Relationships

  12. FACS: Articulation Agreements • Agreement between high school and tech college that high school teacher delivers post-secondary curriculum and college grants credit • Encourages students to stay on site • Saves money for student and for the district

  13. FACS: Articulation Agreements • We have: • Child Development articulation with South Central Tech Colleges We could have: Foods

  14. FACS: More men in Child D! • Men are taking more interest and more responsibility for raising children • Partner with counselor and principal to encourage males to enroll in Child Development

  15. FACS: Family Foods II • Missing national standard content for nutrition and wellness • Support achievement of articulation agreement • Would require additional teaching time

  16. FACS: “On Your Own” class • Need more requirements for seniors to participate in on-campus activities • Enrolling in few courses in senior year does not prepare students for college rigor • Many students need life skills in addition to academics

  17. FACS: “On Your Own” class • Several departments have suggested this for several years • Interdisciplinary teams-- Health, Business, FACS, Social Studies • Possibly use a Hex schedule (middle school model)
