Section 1-President & Vice President • Presidential Succession • Vice President • Speaker of House • President pro tempore of Senate • Secretary of State • Vice President’s Role • Presides over senate, votes in a tie • Helps determine if president is disabled • National Security Council • Represent president overseas • Meets with cabinet

Section 2-Electing the President Original System • No popular vote early on, electors cast vote • Winner president, 2nd most Vice President • 12th amendment-electors cast separate ballot for Pres. And V.P. Electoral College • Monday after second Wed. in December to cast votes • January 6th- Congress counts votes • January 20th- president sworn in- “President-elect” • The Inauguration—rides with outgoing president from White House to Capitol, gives inaugural address, ends with parade from Capital to Whitehouse

  5. Section 3-The Cabinet • The Cabinet • 15 secretaries, VP, several top executives make up his cabinet. (approved by Senate) • 1966- Robert Weaver first African American Cabinet member • 1933-Frances Perkins first woman cabinet member (Labor) • Regan named first Hispanic-Lauro Cavazos (education) • Role of Cabinet • Head their department • Advise President • “Inner Cabinet”-State, Defense, Treasury, Attorney General

Section 4-The Executive Office • EOP-individuals and agencies that assist president • Today it’s the White House Office and several agencies (attorney’s, scientists, social scientists-1500 employees today) • Office Of Management and Budget-largest agency-prepares national budget • National Security Council-helps with military and foreign policy • White House Office-picked by President, no Senate approval; report directly to President (Clinton had 380) • Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, White House Counsel, Press Secretary
