  1. Career Transition Support Australian Blueprint for Career Development (the Blueprint)

  2. The Australian Blueprint for Career Development provides guidelines for helping to integrate and strengthen career development learning in a wide variety of settings throughout the nation. It contains two main components: 1. The career competencies that all Australians need to develop in order to effectively manage life, learning and work. 2. Processes for planning, implementing and evaluating career programs and resources. Career Transition Support

Although the Blueprint has multiple goals, its primary aim is to have users work with a national framework of competencies to create comprehensive, effective and measurable career development programs which help Australians to better manage their lives, learning and work.   4. Career Keys have developed a comprehensive career development resource comprising of three transition workbooks used in schools across Australia. Each workbook uses innovative easy to follow activities designed to complement classroom practices and stimulate discussion. Career Transition Support

  5. With the Blueprint trial funding, Career Keys assigned two Career Advisers to review each book against the 11 competencies and the four developmental life phases. Career Transition Support

  6. Career Transition Support Afocus group was formed to assist in this process which consisted of: - Deputy Principal of Browns Plains SHS - Deputy Principal of Marsden SHS - Teacher at Marsden SHS - Career Advisers at Career Keys

  7. Career Transition Support BLUEPRINT OVERVIEW Main aims: • A national framework of career competencies • Facilitate service consistency • Challenge assumptions about career development • Accelerate the establishment of a career development culture in Australia

  8. Career Transition Support From a national perspective the Blueprint will facilitate national consistency and assist efforts to provide all Australians with opportunities to develop to their full potential.

  9. Career Transition Support CAREER MANAGEMENT COMPETENCIES 11 competencies that are needed to build and manage a career are identified. These competencies are grouped across 3 key areas Area A: Personal Management Area B: Learning and Work Exploration Area C: Career Building

  10. Career Transition Support A: PERSONAL MANAGEMENT Career Competency 1. Build and maintain a positive self concept Career Competency 2. Interact positively and effectively with others Career Competency 3. Change and grow throughout life

  11. Career Transition Support AREA B: LEARNING AND WORK EXPLORATION Career competency 4. Participate in lifelong learning supportive of career goals Career Competency 5. Locate and effectively use career information Career Competency 6. Understand the relationship between work, society and the economy

Career Transition Support AREA C: CAREER BUILDING • Competency 7 Secure/create and maintain work • Competency 8 Make career enhancing decisions • Competency 9 Maintain balanced life and work roles • Competency 10 Understanding the changing nature of life and work roles • Competency 11 Understand, engage in and manage the career building process

  13. Career Transition Support There are 4 developmental levels or phases Phase 1 (primary school) Phase 2 (middle school) Phase 3 (senior secondary college) Phase 4 (adulthood)

Career Transition Support EXAMPLE – PHASE II Area B Competency 5.2 – Locate and use career information P.I.- 5.2.4 - explore the differences between occupations and industry sectors by locating and using available career information resources Local Standard: Given a list of 20 occupations (e.g. plumber, waiter, doctor) , students will match them to a list of corresponding industry sectors using available career information

Career Transition Support The career competencies of the Blueprint align with virtually all of the important initiatives currently underway in schools including: • The Educational Goals for Young Australians • The development of Social Competencies • The New Framework for Vocational Education in Schools • The Employability Skills Framework

  17. Career Transition Support The Blueprint makes the benefits of participating in VET in Schools Programs, enterprise education activities and of developing employability skills and attributes obvious. It also places considerable emphasis on the importance of acquiring lifelong learning habits.

Career Transition Support We have mapped the CATS – Step Two against Certificate I in Work Education and found that the book addresses some of the performance criteria for 2 competencies: GENPCD101B Develop career and learning development plan.GENJSI101B Apply job search and interview skills.

  21. Career Transition Support The Blueprint provides an excellent starting point for schools that are establishing, redesigning or examining a career development program because it is very much about identifying and confirming the positive activities that are already occurring.

  22. Career Transition Support Implementing the Blueprint will not only facilitate the career development of individuals, it will also assist schools to achieve many of the overarching goals of schooling.
