  3. Did African people resist European rule? Africans did not passively accept European claims to rule over them. As European troops advanced on African territory, African people fought back. Even without modern weapons, other Africans still fiercely resisted European powers Zulu people resisted colonization more than 50 years

  4. Who were the Zulu? The European race to divide up Africa brought war to the continent’s southwestern coast… In the early 1800s South Africa belonged to the powerful native ZULU tribe Dutch settlers known as BOERS had also lived in South Africa for several centuries

  5. Who were the Zulu? The Zulu had excellent military organization and skill. They had a legendary leader Shaka Zulu. Under Shaka’s rule, the Zulu gained land throughout southern Africa. He was able to keep the kingdom together and fend off British Imperialism

  6. What happened to the Zulu? Zulu warriors fought against European slave traders & Ivory hunters Shaka had united the Zulu Nation

  7. Why was Shaka so successful? He taught his forces the skills of close combat He told his people to toughen their feet and go barefoot He had the long throwing spears changed and the shields changed He changed the battle tactics

  8. What started the conflict? When the British arrived in South Africa, they pushed the Boers off their land and into Zulu territory The Zulu fought back They were led by the descendants of king SHAKA ZULU

  9. What happened? The Zulus fought the Boers as they migrated north from Cape Colony. Zulu Nation Boers Cape Colony Cape Town

  10. What happened? In 1877 the Zulu again refuse to accept British Rule The Zulu army was only able to use spears and shields against British guns They fought for a long period, but were eventually defeated and the Zulu lost to the British in 1879

  11. What was the result? Years later, there was a six month conflict known as the ZULU WAR… the British overtook the Zulus because of superior weaponry The Zulu territory fell under British control in 1887 when it was annexed
