  2. Background • A pilot grant with NPCC for $60,797 • Exploratory, needs assessment • Qualitative methods • Identify factors that may prevent or facilitate the use of mammography screening among older American Indian and Alaska Native women.

  3. Background • high breast cancer mortality • increased risk with age • improved efficacy of mammography >49yr • low rates of screening among AI/AN women

  4. CDC-BCCEDP • Provides access to breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services to low-income, uninsured, and underinsured women. • Services include: • clinical breast exams • mammograms • surgical consultation • referrals to treatment • diagnostic testing for abnormal outcomes

PHASE I Telephone interviews with staff from 13 tribal Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Programs • identify systematic and programmatic factors that influence access to and use of mammography screening • explore solutions developed by program sites to provide outreach to older AI/AN women

  9. PHASE II Focus groups with women 50 years and older that are eligible for screening through BCCED programs • identify barriers and motivators for receiving annual screening • knowledge and attitudes regarding cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment • assess whether older women receive mammography services outside of tribal clinic services

  10. Potential outcomes • clinical and programmatic implications • contribute knowledge to inform intervention or outreach efforts • define policy issues that affect tribal program abilities to serve older women in their communities
