  2. The Airports • 29 Airports operated by RNTO • 26 Fly in reserves • 3 Road accessible • Two paved runways • Most rely on airport for Air Ambulance • Due to dedicated staff efforts, RNTO provides essential airport services to communities without other transportation options

  3. Operations • 8-5 operations (weekdays except stat holidays) • Runways: • 27, 3500 ft gravel runways • Pickle 5,000 ft paved runway • Armstrong 4,000 ft paved runway • Buildings: • Terminal Building • Garage • Accommodation Building

  4. Operations Continued • Lights for night operations on Runways • All airports have APAPI. • RNTO accelerating projects to replace old buildings with more modern facilities

  5. Special Logistics • MTO must be self sufficient due to minimal resources • Access to airports via: • Airplane for materials • Winter road for freight or new equipment • Barge access in summer (James Bay sites) • MTO must find and haul its own gravel as there are no local commercial suppliers. • Winter roads to access gravel pits. • Gravel is screened or crushed to produce a good runway surface for aircraft

  6. Future Direction • Province not planning construction of any more new airports • Mining and other resource development may lead to a more multi modal transportation system in the north • Community advancement will lead to opportunities for further local involvement • Innovative technologies and processes will be investigated and applied to ensure the RNTO is at the cutting edge of an industry heavily influenced by safety and the efficient use of resources
