A Brief History • Mask wearing began a long time ago in the city of Venice, when it was known as the Venetian Republic. • At this time the city was very wealthy and people began to dress extravagantly. • The custom of wearing mask in Venice become popular at this time so people could hide their identity. • The people of Venice did not want others to know that it was them when they were doing illegal or not nice things. Like making bad business deals.

  3. History Cont. • The Catholic banned wearing masks in the 1100s. • After a while people started wearing masks only during a three month celebration beginning in December. • After a while the celebration shorten to one week and is know as “Carnevale”. • Carnevale is still celebrated today and beautiful masks are still worn and sold in Venice.

  4. Colombina masks • These are the masks that we will be making in class. • They only cover half of the face.

  5. Making Masks • 4A students - We need to make beautiful Venetian masks to decorate our room. • First, take a look at different masks to get an idea of what you would like your mask to look like.
