  4. COACHING PHILOSOPHY The coaching staff is committed to teaching the value of: SPORTSMANSHIP COMPETITION COOPERATION TEAM SPIRIT FRIENDSHIP ACCEPTANCE SUPPORT

  5. BULLYING • Bullying of any kind will not be tolerated! We will deal with each situation on a case by case basis. Consequences may included suspension from practice and meets or possible removal from the team, pending results of an investigation.

  6. NUTRITION Help us promote good health! A well-chosen diet offers many benefits to all athletes, irrespective of event, sex, age or level of competition.

  7. NUTRITION BENEFITS Enhanced recovery within and between workouts and events A reduced risk of injury and illness Confidence in being well-prepared for competition Consistency in achieving high-level performance PLEASE SEE HANDOUT FOR SPECIFIC INFO!

  8. COMMUNICATION • If you have questions or concerns, please be sure the coach is the first contact. • We encourage athletes to work issues out with their coaches before a parent/administrator becomes involved. • PLEASE HELP US TEACH OUR ATHLETES TO BE AN ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES!!!!

  9. CONTACT INFORMATION • It is difficult to discuss parental concerns at a track meet. • Please contact the coach to set up an appointment. Dawn Graham: GrahamD@Issaquah.wednet.edu Phone: 425-785-5748 Cam Elisara: ElisaraC@Issaquah.wednet.edu

  10. PRACTICE TIMES • Practice is every day, as a commitment to the team! • Time: 3:15 - *, Wednesday: 4:05 – • *Practice ending times may vary according to the event coach. Athletes need to check with their coach.

  11. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES • Unexcused absences include: • Babysitting • Drivers Ed • Homework/projects • Work • Forgot workout gear • Music lessons and other commitments

  12. EXCUSED ABSENCES • Excused absences include: • School related activities (band, DECA, choir, tests) • Professional Appointments (dentist, doctor) • Family Emergency • Not at school due to illness • College Visits

  13. UNEXCUSED ABSENCES • More than oneunexcused absence in a three week period will result in the athlete being ineligible for the next meet. • More than twounexcused absences in a three week period will result in longer ineligibility OR removal from the team.

  14. ACADEMIC PROBATION • Occurs when a student-athlete has an F or is below a 2.0 GPA. • While on AP, athletes can practice but cannot compete or travel. • Two consecutive grade checks on AP will result in dismissal from team.

  15. P.E. CREDIT • Athletes participating to earn PE credit need to finish the season and adhere to all team expectations outlined in the handbook. • Also, a combination of 11 absences (excused or unexcused) dismisses and athlete from receiving PE credit. This includes injuries.

  16. CLUB SPORTS/PERSONAL TRAINING We do not and cannot support athletes being involved in club sports or multiple activities during the track season for the following reasons: • Per WIAA rules athletes may not miss practice for any club/select practice or competition. • Athletes involved in multiple activities will probably end up injured as a result of overuse. • Athletes need to make a decision on what’s important. They can’t do it all and be successful! • Personal training is discouraged during the season. THERE NEEDS TO BE ONE VOICE DURING THE SEASON!

  17. EQUIPMENT • Athletes need a good pair of training shoes. • Sweatshirt & sweatpants. • Sprinters need spikes. • Throwers need throwing shoes! • Jumping shoes are optional.

  18. VALUABLES • Do not bring valuables to practices/meets. • Coaches are not responsible for any valuables that are lost or stolen at practices/meets. • Athletes need to secure their valuables. If an athlete wants a locker they need to talk to the PE teachers at skyline.

  19. SPRING BREAK • We do have practices during spring break. Athletes need to see their event coaches for day/time of practices. Every coach will have their own schedule. • Please let us know if you are leaving for spring break!

  20. RELAYS • The selection of relays is a subjective process. • It is not always the case that the 4 fastest athletes will be on a given relay. An athlete could be a competitor on a relay all season and may be an alternate or not compete at invitationals or post season meets (district, state). • Relay coaches strive to practice fairness in relation to substituting, while also attempting to present the most competitive team possible. • Many factors are taken into account when selecting a relay. • Consistency, attendance and team attitude are just as important to speed when selecting our relay teams. • This policy is communicated to our athletes regularly throughout the season!

  21. LETTERING STANDARDS • First and foremost….athletes must complete the season. If an athlete quits the team before the end of the season, cannot complete the season due to an injury, or is dismissed from the team, they will not receive a letter or PE credit. • To earn a varsity letter, an athlete must be in the top 16 in their particular event, complete the season, and attend the banquet at the end of the season.

  22. LETTERING….CONTINUED • More than (2) unexcused absences in a three week period may result in an athlete not receiving a letter. • Excessive absences (excused or unexcused) may disqualify an athlete from receiving a letter. • *We reserve the right to letter an athlete who would have, in the opinion of the coaching staff competed in the KingCo championship, but due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a season ending injury, was not able to compete.

  23. AWAY MEETS • If a bus is provided athletes cannot drive themselves to meets. • Athletes are expected to stay until the conclusion of the meet and ride the bus home with the team. • If athlete needs to go home with a parent, the head coaches need to be contacted 24 hours ahead of time, and you must sign your athlete out with a head coach! • Athletes are only allowed to go home with their parent. A note is required if they’re riding home with someone else’s parent.

  24. VOLUNTEERS “Ask not what the track program can do for you but what you can do for the Skyline program” • We rely heavily on parents and community volunteers. • We need 20-25 volunteers to run an efficient, professional meet! • You do not need to know all the rules of track and field to help at a meet.

  25. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Field event coaches need help! If you’re a parent of a field athlete you can watch them up close and personal by volunteering. Concessions End of season banquet. We understand that everyone has a busy schedule! We ask that every family contribute time to some aspect of our team!!!

  26. UNIFORMS • We would like athletes to purchase their uniform. Instructions are attached. Why? • We are spending a considerable amount of time issuing and then collecting uniforms. • Athletes are not turning their uniforms back in on dates we outline. • Uniforms are not being washed according to the instructions we provide. • We WILL provide a waterproof jacket. Athletes provide a pair of black warm-up pants. • Athletes are required to wear the team issued warm-ups and uniforms on the day of the meet. Personal warm-ups are not allowed!!! • Athletes must turn in the uniform they were issued, AND in the condition it was issued. We will provide printed instructions.

  27. UNIFORMS We will provide a waterproof jacket. Athletes need to wear a solid black pair of sweatpants. What if we don’t want to purchase a uniform? We have uniforms we can check out, but we can’t promise sizes or conditions. We will be strict about turn in dates and the condition of the returned uniform.
