Originally, some preterite-present verbs had a preterite (past) form but a present meaning. hé cann ‘he knows how to’ hann kann hún veit héo wát ‘she knows’ And then they acquired a new past tense: hé cúþe ‘he knew how to’ hann kunni hún vissi héo wisste ‘she knew’
