  2. The System • Maintains homeostasis and long-term control using chemical signals • Works parallel with the nervous system • Controls growth and maturation

  3. Hormones • The endocrine system is a collection of glands that secrete chemical messages we call hormones • The role is selecting target cells and delivering the hormonal message • Hormones are grouped into three classes based upon there structure

  4. Parts of The Endocrine System • Hypothalamus • Pituitary • Thyroid • Adrenals • the reproductive glands, which include the ovaries and testes.

  5. The Hypothalamus • Specialized cells • Located in the lower part of the brain • Nerve cell controls pituitary gland • Most important part of the endocrine system • Also called the “master gland”

  6. The Pituitary Gland The tiny pituitary gland is divided into two parts: the anterior lobe and the posterior lobe. The anterior lobe regulates the activity of the thyroid, adrenals, and reproductive glands. Among the hormones it produces are: • •growth hormone, which stimulates the growth of bone and other body tissues and plays a role in the body's handling of nutrients and minerals • •prolactin, which activates milk production in women who are breastfeeding • •thyrotropin, which stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones • •corticotrophin, which stimulates the adrenal gland to produce certain hormones

  7. The tHyroid And Parathyroid • Thyroid hormones plays a key role in bone growth and brain development • They control the rate as which the cells burns fuel from food. • Attached to the thyroid are four tiny glands that function together called the parathyroid

  8. The Adrenal Glands • Two triangular glands • Consisted of two parts • They produce a set of hormones • The outer part produces hormones that regulates water balance in the body • The inner part produces hormones that increase blood pressure and heart rate

  9. How Does It Work ? • The endocrine system is a control system of ductless glands that secrete hormones that circulate within the body via the bloodstream to affect cells within specific organs. It is also instrumental in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, and metabolism, as well as sending messages and acting on them
