  1. Psy 1513 - Allen Ch 4Review

  2. Variables • Sensation: • Information arriving from sense organs • (eye, ear, etc.) • Perception: • Mental process of organizing sensations into meaningful patterns

  3. Variables Absolute Threshold – Minimum amount of stimuli needed to experience a sensation Just Noticeable Difference – amount of increase in stimuli to make a perceivable difference in sensation

  4. Variables Sensory adaptation- decrease in response to an unchanging stimulus Selective attention – attending only to a specific stimulus (ex. Cocktail Party Effect)

  5. Variables • Your Senses: • Sight – Visual • Stimulus – visual spectrum • Hearing – Auditory • Stimulus – sound waves • Tasting – Gustation • Stimulus – chemicals in food particles • Smelling – Olfaction • Stimulus – chemicals in the air • Touching – Somesetic • Stimulus – mechanical, chemical, temperature

  6. Variables Lens – focuses light onto the retina Cornea – protective covering over the eye Retina – location of photoreceptor cells (rods & cones) Blind Spot – area where the optic nerve leaves the eye, because no photoreceptors are found here we are “blind” in that area

  7. Variables • List the parts of the eye. Know location and function of each part. • cornea (covering), lens (focus light), retina (photoreceptors), optic nerve (carries signal to brain), blind spot (where nerve leaves eye)
