History/Story • In Greek mythology Narcissus was a man who was said to be extremely beautiful • Was often pursued by women but he paid no attention to them. A nymph named Echo loved him very much but he did not return the love. Echo was heartbroken and ran away. The goddess Nemesis found out and led Narcissus to a pool of water. • As he bent to drink from the pool of water he saw his reflection. He instantly fell in love with the image. • Some versions say he fell in and drowned • Other versions say he couldn’t leave his reflection and withered in that spot and died
Present Day • The word ‘narcissism’ derives from the story of Narcissus • Narcissism means to have obsessive focus on oneself, particularly one’s appearance
Continued… • After Narcissus died a flower bloomed in his place. This flower is now called a narcissus
Examples • I called Nancy a narcissist when she would stop at every car window to admire her reflection. • Samantha was such a narcissist that she thought herself to be better and more beautiful than any other person in the world.
