  1. Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [VLC MAC comment resolution recommendations] Date Submitted: [21 January, 2010] Source:Praveen Gopalakrishnan, Sridhar Rajagopal [Intel, Samsung Electronics] Re: [] Abstract: [VLC device classification and mobility considerations are discussed.] Purpose: [Contribution to IEEE 802.15.7 VLC TG] Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor acknowledges and accepts that this contribution becomes the property of IEEE and may be made publicly available by P802.15. Praveen Gopalakrishnan, Intel

  2. CQI and LQI clarification • Retain CQI and drop LQI • Ability to specify per-channel ‘color quality indication’ -- Information Element for CQI • Channel (band plan ID) & CQI value • Add Information Element for CQI exchange • Make appropriate modifications to text Praveen Gopalakrishnan, Intel

  3. Suggested text (6.10.5) • The CQI measurement is a characterization of the strength and/or quality of a received packet. The measurement may be implemented using receiver ED, a signal-to-noise ratio estimation, or a combination of these methods. The use of the CQI result by the network or application layers is not specified in this standard. The CQI measurement shall be performed for each received packet, and the result shall be reported to the MAC sublayer using PD-DATA.indication (see 6.2.1.3) as an integer ranging from 0x00 to 0xff. The minimum and maximum CQI values (0x00 and 0xff) should be associated with the lowest and highest quality IEEE 802.15.7 signals detectable by the receiver, and CQI values in between should be uniformly distributed between these two limits. At least eight unique values of CQI shall be used. CQI value shall indicate the band plan ID, as given by the value in the PHY header of the received packet. A single CQI value set consists of band plan ID and corresponding CQI value as shown below. • CQI is communicated to another device using the CQI Information Element. CQI value to be sent in the Information Element may be an average value across a number of packets. Praveen Gopalakrishnan, Intel

  4. Starting a PAN • It is recommended that the following text be added at the beginning of section 7.7.5 • Broadcast mode does not have any requirements for starting a PAN. Capability exchange should occur for all bi-directional communication during link establishment. If a device supports multiple transmit color channels, it can exchange the CQI metrics for channel selection. There is no channel selection process requirement if the device supports only a single color channel. Praveen Gopalakrishnan, Intel

  5. Unresolved – action items • Re-organize Starting PAN and bring sections • Scan (if needed) • Beacon generation • Device discovery • Move current text under starting PAN under association • Associate primitive capabilities field to be merged with PHY-MAC capabilities IE • find out why data request is needed during the association process (page 79) Praveen Gopalakrishnan, Intel
