You will get excellent “Notes Quiz” scores If you think you take good notes already, try harder and see what happens. If not…start now.

  11. The Need for Energy pg. 221 Section CELL ENERGY (CAPITALIZE and/or underline red headings in book) 9.1 Skip a line… Main ideas and vocabulary words start at the margin • Bullets will be used to reinforce main points • Bullets will also be used for additional relative information You don’t have to draw the pictures. However, drawing them will help you remember the notes. Drawings can be quick and simple unless I ask you to draw them If I asked you to draw a man wearing “cool” socks and giving the “thumbs up” while saying, “Biology rocks my socks,” what would you draw?

  12. The Need for Energy pg. 221 Section CELL ENERGY 9.1 Review: Autotrophs – Make their own food using energy from the ______ • An example of an autotroph is a _________ Heterotrophs – Get energy by consuming _____________ • An example of a heterotroph is a _____________ What is energy? The capacity to do work OR Usable heat or power Our bodies require energy for everything it does from exercise to active transport ATP is the name of the energy stored in the chemical bonds of the molecule adenosine triphosphate Adenosine (a base and a sugar) is attached to three phosphate groups.

  13. Adenosine TriPhosphate

  14. FORMING AND BREAKING DOWN ATP AMP is Adenosine MonoPhosphate Adding another phosphate requires more energy to make ADP – Adenosine DiPhosphate The charged phosphate groups act like magnets Bonding three phosphates to form ATP takes considerable energy ADP is the molecule formed from removing a phosphate from ATP that results in a release of energy The released energy between phosphate 2 & 3 is used for biological reactions ATP is recycled and can NOT be stored What do we call stored energy?

  15. FORMING AND BREAKING DOWN ATP ATP P P P Adenosine P Protein ADP Look at figure 9.2 in your book for a picture ADP Protein P P Protein P P Adenosine

  16. FORMING AND BREAKING DOWN ATP The process is similar to your cell phone if it used ATP and ADP Converting ADP into ATP ATP gone Left only with ADP ATP breaking down into ADP

  17. That concludes 9.1
