  10. Awe • Awe is an emotion comparable to wonder but less joyous, and more fearful or respectful. • In general awe is directed at objects considered to be more powerful than you. • the breaking of huge waves on the base of a rocky cliff • the thundering roar of a massive waterfall • the Great Pyramid of Giza • the Grand Canyons • or the vastness of open space in the cosmos are all places or concepts which would typically inspire awe.

  11. Assess Yourself Based on a Rubric for assessing our wonderment and awe from Mulberry Grove School, which are you? A Novice? An Apprentice? A Practitioner? An Expert?

  12. Novice • Student is not curious, oblivious to the world around them. They perceive of learning as ‘boring’ or ‘hard work’ and recoil from situations that demand too much from them. Help in this area is rejected.

  13. Apprentice • Student’s curiosity needs to be encouraged by others and with help they can find interest and beauty in some places. They also need support to consider their learning or their place in the universe.

  14. Practitioner • Student is curious, communing with the world around them and finding interest and beauty but only in a limited number of spheres. They are sometimes compelled, enthusiastic and passionate about learning and their place in the universe.

  15. Expert • Student is curious, communing with the world around them and finding interest and beauty in the widest variety of places. They are compelled, enthusiastic and passionate about learning and their place in the universe.

  16. "He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed." Albert Einstein
