In this lab activity, you will separate a mixture of liquid and solid substances and analyze their characteristic properties. Follow the provided procedures and safety guidelines to conduct the tests. Record your observations and data accurately to identify the components of the sludge mixture. Your conclusions should include information about the liquids and solids present, along with details of their properties.

IPS Lab Final: Sludge Instructions
Purpose You are being given a mixture of liquid(s) and solid(s), using only substances we have used and/or discussed this year. Your job is to: 1) separate the components of the mixture 2) test the substance(s) and list as many characteristic properties as you can It is NOT necessary to NAME the substances, although you may guess if you like.
Procedure 5 points: Prep Make a list of GENERAL procedures that you will do, in approximate order, along with the question/purpose for each procedure.
What could you do? You can ONLY follow procedures/tests that we have done this year, and in the safe manner that we completed them. Following directions, neatness, SAFETY, cooperation – 10 pts
Did you separate ALL substances? (10/5/2pts) • All liquid(s) and solid(s) – 10 pts • Most liquid(s) and solid(s) – 5 pts • Some liquid(s) and solid(s) – 2 pts
Conclusion/List of Substances (25) Our Sludge #____ contains ___liquid(s) and ___ solid(s). From our testing, this is the information we have collected about the components: Solid 1 Liquid 1 Color Color Odor Clear? Solubility in diff solvents What solids dissolve/don’t dissolve in it Consistency (powder, metallic) Boiling Point Etc. Odor Flammability Etc. Solid 2, etc. Liquid 2, etc.
Grading Rubric (this is worth 1/2 of the IPS final) • Names: ________________________________________ • Block: _____ • IPS Lab Final Grading Form • Plan Completed: 5 • Running Record of Observations: 50 • Includes: purpose/question, test • performed, results (data tables, • graphs, observations, measurements, • calculations, etc.), conclusions/new • questions raised. • Separation of Substances • All 10 • Most 5 • Some 2 • List all you have learned about 25 • each of substances separated • (characteristic properties) • and possible identification • Following directions, neatness, SAFETY 10 • Cooperation
