  2. The Neuron • The basic unit of the nervous system. • A single cell capable of receiving and relaying information. • Of all the cells in our body, only neurons interact. • Estimated that the average human has 100 billion neurons in his/her nervous system.

  3. Structure of a Neuron • 3 Basic Parts: • Soma: Body of the cell. • Axon: Outgoing, thick projection off of the soma (output). • Dendritic branches: incoming, thin projections off of the soma (input).
