  2. What are Instructional Probes? • Short pre-made assessments based on spiraling CSOs • CSO specific; based on deconstruction of CSO skills • Available Probes • Math grades 3-8 & Algebra I • RLA grades 3-8 • Utilized by teachers & interventionists

Instructional Probe Structure Instructional Probe for Math (Skill: Addition) Probe Contents: 3 questions from MA.5.1.7 3 questions from MA.4.1.7 3 questions from MA.3.1.8 3 Probes for each objective/skill (Form A, B, C) Example: WVDE M 5 1 7 Instructional Probe – Addition, Form A WVDE M 5 1 7 Instructional Probe – Addition, Form B WVDE M 5 1 7 Instructional Probe – Addition, Form C

  4. Purposes of Instructional Probes • Moving from reactive data (WESTEST2) to proactive data (Acuity) • Data-driven instruction at Core, Target, and Intensive levels • Effective and efficient teaching practices • Independent or collaborative data analysis

  5. Uses of Instructional Probes Core: Classroom assessments; Bell-ringers; Classroom instruction • Details class-wide student mastery of specific grade level CSOs • Use before, during, and after instruction • Use data to provide differentiated instruction

  6. Uses of Instructional Probes Targeted: Small group assessments on targeted CSOs • Details individual student mastery of specific, grade level CSO or identifies the missing prerequisite skill • Use data to provide scaffolded instruction • Monitor progress by reassessing with the multiple forms

  7. Uses of Instructional Probes Intensive: Small group assessments on targeted CSO skills • Details individual student mastery of specific skills embedded in the CSO • Use data to drive explicit instruction • Monitor progress with probes • Provide motivation to students performing below grade level • Opportunities to experience success/progress • Appropriate data is collected for SAT referral and/or eligibility requirements • Progress monitoring enhances learning
