  6. The Coming of the Prophetic Kingdom • The Time of Its Coming • The chronological question • “How long?” was a question on the minds of the godly remnant who longed for the reinstatement of God’s mediatorial kingdom after the exile. • The appointed time • The prophets speak of this restoration as happening both in “a little while” (Hag 2:6-9; cf. Isa 29:17-18) and after the lapse of “many days” (Hos 3:4-5) or in the “last days.” How can this be reconciled? • The intervening events – The kingdom will not come until after: • a period of complete devastation in the land of Palestine (Isa 6:11-12). • a period of worldwide dispersion of the nation of Israel. • a period in which Israel will be “without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice” (Hos 3:4-5). • a series of 4 world empires have run their course, culminating in a world dictator who will inflict great suffering on the Jewish nation (Dan 7:17-27). • a resurrection of godly Israelites (Dan 12:1-3).

  7. The Coming of the Prophetic Kingdom • The Time of Its Coming • The King’s First arrival is dated. How? • By the prophecy of 70 weeks found in Daniel 9. The first 69 of these weeks of years have their beginning point with Artaxerxes’ decree in 445 B.C. to rebuild the city of Jerusalem (Neh 2:1-8), and their end point with the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem (Dan 9:25). • The kingdom’s establishment is left undated. • After the 69th week, the Messiah is “cut off” and Jerusalem is destroyed (Dan 9:26). • There is an unspecified time interval between the 69th week and the 70th week. It is after the 70th week that the kingdom is established.

  8. Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks – Dan 9:24-27 70th week 69 weeks = 483 years 1 week = 7 years 7 weeks = 49 years 62 weeks = 434 years Artaxerxes decree to re-build Jerusalem, 445 or 444 B.C. (Neh 2:1-8) Completion of rebuilding of Jerusalem. Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, A.D. 32 or 33 (Luke 19:28-38). • After the 69 weeks (Dan 9:26): • Messiah is cut-off. • Jerusalem is destroyed in A.D. 70. The prince of the people to come (i.e. Antichrist) makes a firm covenant with the many for one week, but puts a stop to sacrifice and offering halfway through the week (Dan 9:27).

  9. The Coming of the Prophetic Kingdom • The Manner of the Kingdom’s Coming • It will be sudden and catastrophic – not slowly and gradually! (See Dan 2:44, 45 and Revelation 19:11ff). • It will be supernatural - as opposed to being brought in by men. • God presently rules largely through providence, a rule which is understood only by those who are spiritually enlightened. • That which will happen in connection with the establishment of the kingdom in the future (i.e., the judgments of the 7 sealed scroll) will clearly be supernatural in character, revealing the mighty arm of the Lord. • It will be tangible and visible. • “Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, And all flesh will see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken” (Isa 40:5).

  10. The Establishment of the Prophetic Kingdom • Preparatory Events – Before the Day of the Lord, according to McClain. • A court of judgment will be set in heaven (Dan 7:9-10). • A judicial scene in heaven that determines the judgments to be poured out on the earth at the end of Gentile dominion. • The voice of a prophetic messenger will be heard on earth (Mal 4:5,6) • Divinely commissioned to do a work of preparation in the nation of Israel. • Warning all men of impending judgments by God. • Called “Elijah” and arriving before the great Day of the Lord. • Internecine warfare and chaos will sweep the world • Though the world seemingly has always been at war at one place or another, such strife between nations will increase as the end draws near. • A blasphemous political ruler will rise to world power • Just as in past history, out of this scene of worldwide chaos will arise one who proclaims to have the solution! He will appear on the scene before the Day of the Lord, but will rise to power half way through it – all by the predetermined plan of God. • There will be great geological and cosmic disturbances • Joel 2:30-31 “And I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, blood, fire, and columns of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.” • Such disturbances will be intensified as the Day of the Lord progresses.

  11. Daniel’s 70th Week 3 ½ years = 1260 days 3 ½ years = 1260 days Abomination of Desolation (Matt 24:15; Dan 9:27) marks halfway point of 70th week. “The Great Tribulation” (Matt 24:16-21; Dan 12:1). Outpouring of trumpet and bowl judgments of Rev 8-9, 15-16. Antichrist given authority to act for a period of 42 months = 1260 days (Dan 7:24-25; Rev 13:3-7; 2 Thess 2:8-9). “Beginning of birth pangs” (Matt 24:3-8). This is time of the breaking of the first 6 seals of Rev 6.

  12. The Establishment of the Prophetic Kingdom • Penal Events – During the Darkness of the Day of the Lord • Wrath will fall upon the nation of Israel. • As bad as Israel’s suffering has been in the past, there is something ahead for her that is far worse: “Alas! for that day is great, There is none like it; And it is the time of Jacob's distress, But he will be saved from it” (Jer 30:7). • Wrath will fall also on all the Gentile nations. • Isaiah 26:21 “For behold, the LORD is about to come out from His place To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity;”

  13. The Establishment of the Prophetic Kingdom • Transitional Events – at the Dawn of the Day of the Lord • The glorious arrival of the mediatorial king • At the culmination of the rule of the false christ, God’s Messiah will return to vanquish His enemies. • Isaiah 25:9 And it will be said in that day, “Behold, this is our God for whom we have waited that He might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.” • The destruction of the hostile armies • Zechariah 12:9 "And it will come about in that day that I will set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.” • The doom of the blasphemous “little horn.” • Daniel 7:11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire.

  14. The Establishment of the Prophetic Kingdom • Constitutive Events – During the Light of the Day of the Lord • There will be a physical resurrection from among the Israelites after “Jacob’s trouble” (Dan 12:1-3). • There will be a repentance of Israelites in the land (Zech 12:9-10). • There will be a regathering of dispersed Israelites from all over the globe. • Predicted as early as Deut 30:1-10 and emphasized throughout the Minor Prophets; it as certain to come to pass as the dispersion has. • Unlike previous returns to the land, this one will be permanent and accompanied by spiritual renewal for the whole nation. • There will be a judgment of living Israelites (Ezek 20:33-38). • There will also be a judgment of living Gentile nations. • Joel 3:2 I will gather all the nations, and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. Then I will enter into judgment with them there on behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations; and they have divided up My land.
