  1. Currents

  2. Ocean Currents and Climate • There are two types of Ocean Currents: • Surface Currents are driven by the winds. • These waters make up about 10% of all the water in the ocean. These waters are the upper 400 meters of the ocean.

  3. 2. Deep Water Currents are driven by Thermohaline Circulation- • Makes up the other 90% of the ocean. • Moves around the ocean basins by density-driven forces and gravity. • Two forces are: • 1.) Temperature • 2.) Salinity • These deep waters sink into the deep ocean basins at high latitudes where the temperatures are cold enough to cause the density to increase.

  4. Ocean Currents are influenced by many forces: • Primary Forces start the water moving • solar heat • gravity • winds • coriolois

  5. 1. Primary Force: gravity • Elevated water at the equator begins to “flow poleward” due to gravity.

  6. 2. Primary Force: Winds

  7. 3. Primary Force: Coriolois • The curvature of motion due to Earth’s rotation. Curvature is to the: • Right in the Northern Hemisphere • Left in the Southern Hemisphere.

  8. Western Boundary Currents originate in low latitudes and move to high latitudes. They are warm, shallow, fast-moving currents

  9. Eastern Boundary Currents originate in high latitudes and move to low latitudes. They are cold, deep, slow-moving currents.
