  2. Two Sculptors I dreamed I stood in a studio And watched two sculptors there. The clay they used was a child’s mind And they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher- the tools she used Were books, music, and art. The other, a parent, who worked with a Guiding hand and gentle, loving heart. When at last, their task was done They were proud of what they wrought, For the things they had molded into the Child could neither be sold nor bought And each agreed they would have failed If each had worked alone. For behind the teacher stood the school And behind the parent, the home.

  9. Goals for the school year… • To instill a love of learning and encourage the children to become life-long learners. • To encourage the children to be confident in their abilities as learners. • To encourage independence.

Second Grade Curriculum • Reading: Good Habits, Great Readers series Guided reading instruction using leveled books COMETS and Title 1 Basic Skills groups The Daily Five Skill development (vocabulary, sight words, word families, phonemic awareness, phonics, etc.) Fluency instruction: Readers’ Theatre Comprehension skills (predicting, drawing conclusions, making inferences, making connections to text, summarizing, self-questioning, evaluating, etc.) Independent reading Self-selection of books (Book Boxes)

Second Grade Curriculum • Writing / Language Arts Writer’s Workshop format Writing process (prewriting, envisioning, drafting, editing, revising, publishing) Conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure) Craft! Use of mentor text Writing conferencing Word Study (an approach to learning about the spelling of words) • Mathematics Everyday Mathematics program Spiraling of skills Relevance to real-world situations Problem solving Explorations, games, and manipulatives Fact Fluency (xtramath.com)

Second Grade Curriculum • Science Science Companion curriculum materials Units include Habitats, Sound, and Rocks Inquiry based instruction that draws on observation and reflection • Social Studies Units include Communities, Geography, Economics, Native Americans • Class Meetings Meet weekly to discuss and share celebrations and struggles “Talking Stick” Bucket Fillers
