WELCOME TO ORATInfo Session 3: CIC PROCESSING TIME 2nd Info Session is settlement planning, 3rd is CIC Processing Time (you are here now); and 4th is when you hear from the refugee’s arrival MANDATE • To provide information & method of communication on CIC processing times • To assist sponsors to understand their choices while case is processed overseas GOAL • Transparency • Accountability tool • Empowering: You are in charge • Proactive Role vs. Observer Role WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SESSION? Sponsors whose sponsorship undertaking was approved by the Archdiocese already 1/20

REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP FILE PROCESSING STEPS • Attend Info Session 1 • Participate in a one-on-one consultation • Submit your basic sponsorship application to ORAT (9 questions) • ORAT may ask for clarification and/or further questions to determine case eligibility • Settlement Training? • ORAT asks you to approach churches - if you have not done so already • CG caseworker/ cosponsor prepares necessary draft immigration forms for both the parish and the refugees • ORAT helps you to finalize all the forms • File is signed by CG • ORAT presents the file at the Archdiocese • Case signing and submission to CIC 2/20

  3. Step 25: ORAT invites cosponsor/ Constituent Group (CG) to attend Info session 3: CIC Processing Time. (You are here now)  • Step 26: CPOW emails Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) or requires corrections 30– 60 days after the Archdiocese approves your case and submits it. “Automatic” info you might expect from CIC • Step 28: CPOW transfers file to CIC visa post abroad and issues 1st Benchmark letter -G-number letter – “Automatic” info you might expect from CIC. Please inform ORAT. “CIC Processing Time Starts once Visa Post opens the file: www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm/ref-private.asp • Step 32: CG and cosponsor notify ORAT about scheduled interview. Parish caseworker assists refugee in interview preparations. “Automatic” info you might expect from CIC (With interview completion “CIC Processing Time Ends”). • Step 33: CG and cosponsor notify ORAT about interview result (2nd benchmark) • Step 34: If interview is positive: CIC conducts admissibility and security checks, refugee undergoes medical examinations; if interview is negative: rejection letter. • Step 36: CG or ORAT gets Notice of Arrival Transmission (NAT) from CIC -““Automatic” info you might expect from CIC • Step 39: CG and cosponsor go to the airport to welcome the newcomer and informs ORAT about arrival - settlement part of the sponsorship starts!  3/20

  7. CASE COMPLICATIONS • If you have any questions/ concerns, e-mail CPOW: CPOW-BTCW@cic.gc.ca. Attach a filled and signed IMM5475 – Authority to Release Personal Information form if you were not originally on the Undertaking form. • You can also call CIC Call Centre (1-888-242-2100). • If there is any concern, request a copy of your overseas file from CIC Ottawa (you might need help from immigration consultant, paralegal or lawyer). www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/atip/requests-personal.asp (In section check off Physical file and Immigration files overseas). • If the decision is rejection, you need to hire a lawyer to prepare an application for leave at the Federal Court. (It may cost about $2,500-$4,000). • If you have concerns about the delay of your case visit your Member of Parliament. • You can write to the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration & Multiculturalism, and every time please send a copy to ORAT so your case can be monitored. • After the interview, if medicals are NOT received immediately, the refugee should submit the following information to ORAT by e-mail: • Factual report of your visit at the visa post: visit time, date, location, persons present, length of interview, how you were treated, etc, - and all of the questions asked and answers given; • Your evaluation or impression of how the interview went; • If we asked you to mention at least one thing which could have been negative during the interview what it would be. If in the process, you need an immigration consultant, a paralegal or a lawyer, ORAT can provide referral to you. 7/20

HOW TO CHECK A REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP STATUS ON THE INTERNET • Go to Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp • On the right side: I Need To …Check application status • Client Application Status page: https://services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas/?app=ecas&lang=en • Hit the Continue button • Read the conditions and then check the box and click on the continue button • Select one of the Identification Types and fill in the data: Unique Client Identifier (UCI) number - is ending of the CIC in Canada file number (8 digits; e.g.: 1234-5678) or: (G-number is the Immigration File Number overseas - letter ‘B” with 9 numeric digits; e.g.: G123456789; different from the CIC file number) • 7. Type in the Family name of the principal applicant • 8. Select Date of Birth and Place (country) of Birth from the drop down menu • 9. Hit the Continue button 9/20
