  2. About Mrs. Mendoza • B.A. –Education, Southeastern Louisiana University • Certified for grades 1-8 in Louisiana, Georgia, and Tennessee • Over 22 years teaching experience • Married with 4 children, one grandson • I LOVE MY JOB!

  3. About Mrs. Harvey • B.S. – Education, University of Southern Mississippi • Certified PreK- 8th in Louisiana, Georgia, and Mississippi • 20 years teaching experience • Married with 3 children • I LOVE MY JOB TOO!!!

  4. CLASS EXPECTATIONS: • 1. Respect the classroom schedule • 2. Communicate is ways that show you care • 3. Take a risk-Ask questions • 4. Completed work should reflect directions and material covered

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS/HOMEWORK • A weekly list of assignments will be given and stapled into planners each Monday, as well as posted on my teacher web page. • Assignments are posted in the classroom daily, homework assignments are to be copied into the planner. Work not completed in class will be sent home to finish for homework. • Homework assignments may be graded/recorded.

  6. Mrs. Harvey’s Weekly Plans Spelling/Handwriting Long Vowels Monday the words will be written three times in ABC order. Tuesday packet pages 2 and 3 will be completed. Wednesday packet pages 4 and 5 will be completed. Thursday packet work is due and will be checked in class. Unit Test is Friday. English The Perfect Paragraph will be introduced this week. Monday simple sentences and simple predicates will be identified in sentences and the 3.5 paragraph will be completed. Tuesday sentence group work will take place. Wednesday the perfect paragraph will be introduced and compound subjects and predicates will be reviewed. Thursday we will review the skills covered throughout this week. Friday a subject and predicate quiz will take place and the My Favorite Book Essay will be assigned.

  7. ELA-continued: Reading Short story notes should be studied throughout the week. Monday we will finish a close read of “Seeing Things His Own Way.” Students will work in groups on comprehension questions. The comprehension test for “Seeing Things His Own Way” will take place Tuesday.Thursday the Short Story Test covering information from the notes will take place. Thursday the article “The Practice of Slowing Down” will be read and discussed in class, and a close read activity will follow.Friday “Thick and Thin” questions will be introduced and discussed in class. Students will break into groups and create a thick and thin question based on the information from the article “The Practice of Slowing Down.” The novel Hatchet will be introduced.

  8. GRADED PAPER FOLDERS: • Graded papers will be returned as soon as the grades are recorded on JPAMS. • Students will be directed to place these into the “Graded Paper Folders”. These folders will be kept at school during the week and sent home on Thursdays. • If you are not seeing graded assignments please call or email me and we will work with your child to make sure papers are getting home.

  9. MAKE-UP WORK • A student’s absence does not excuse him/her from missed class assignments or tests. • All make-up work must be completed and turned in. • Parents may call school and request missed work be sent to the office.

  10. PLANNERS: • Planners will have a planned outline of assignments stapled inside each Monday. • Daily homework should be written by the student for completion at home. • The student’s planner is initialed each day. • The planner is also a great communication tool. Please feel free to write notes of concern or questions in the planner.

  17. Spelling • Packets are distributed each Tuesday and due Thursday • Unit tests take place each Friday unless we have a shortened week

English • DLR Tests take place each Friday • DLR work should be placed within the binder. • DLR corrections are the students’ responsibility. • Notes are taken in class and must be studied. • Worksheets • Formal essays are counted as assessment grades. • Short writing falls under the composition part of the grading category. (20%)

  19. Reading • We will read the following novels this year: • Hatchet • The Egypt Game • Across Five Aprils • The final Unit of study will come from the Treasures textbook series and will deal with the Renaissance. • Cloze and close reads • Workbooks used to cover skills • Learning centers
