Some background:what happens to soc majors?? • ASA study of the Class of 2005 – Sociology BA Graduates • www.asanet.org (Click on “Students” at top right) • Upon graduation: • 22% planned to go to grad school only • 42% planned to work only • 27% planned to work and go to grad school

Job satisfaction? • Almost 70% of those who said their job is “closely related” to sociology reported being “very satisfied” with their job. • If job was “not related” to sociology, only 36% were “very satisfied” with their job. • SO: Look for a job that uses your sociology skills!!
Communicating about your sociology skills • The ASA study found: • Soc grads often did not list sociology-related skills on resume, AND • Failed to discuss those skills in the job interview • You won’t get a “sociology-related” job that way!!
Skills soc grads reported learning • Developing evidence-based arguments • Evaluating different research methods • Writing a report understandable to non-sociologists • Forming and testing hypotheses • Using computer resources to develop a reference list • Analyzing data, creating charts and interpreting results • Conducting interviews and focus groups • Using statistical software (SPSS, Excel)
What other skills/perspectives have you learned at csulb? • Let’s brainstorm…

And a bit more… • Clear and logical writing style • Persuasive, effective oral presentation skills • Producing professional-quality powerpoint presentations. • Using Facebook and other social networking sites to publicize events.
How to boast without boasting at a job interview • Working sociology into the discussion • Your ideas? • Mention your concentration or other specific coursework • Think about papers, projects, internships that you did that relate to the job in some way before the interview • How might collecting some data help the organization solve a problem it is facing – sketch it out for them
