Comparing major and independent record labels • Independent record labels usually specialise in one of two specific genres, and so they attract a niche audience, whereas major record labels will sign almost any popular artists or band and so they have a much broader range of genres available to advertise to their mass audience. • There is also a difference in the way they advertise their artists or bands. For example independent record labels mainly use iTunes to sell their songs and albums and YouTube to advertise, but major record labels use a variety of different methods such as festivals, music channels and talk shows, like the graham Norton show.
