Jesus, God’s answer to Evil • To describe attitudes that “neutralise” evil • To explain how Jesus transforms suffering • To evaluate a case study where a person responds to suffering in a Christian way
“THEREFORE GOD SENT HIS SON INTO THE WORLD.” God suffered in Jesus. He took on evil, forgave evil-doers, met evil with good. In this way left us an example of how to cancel out evil and stop its destructive power from affecting others. But through his cross, he also gave a purpose to our suffering – from now on suffering evil like he did will bring us closer to God, and make God’s kingdom come. Explain 2 ways how suffering like Jesus can defeat evil. Do you think this works? **Does Jesus as God’s answer to evil show that God is a caring, all-powerful, all-knowing God, even with evil in the world? Or does it show God as useless/ powerless?
A useless teaching?Even if you do follow Jesus’ way of dealing with evil, it won’t stop your suffering. Is it worth it? Wouldn’t people be better off fighting back?
Is Jesus the best answer to suffering? • Job (suffering is beyond understanding) • Augustine (our free will - our fault) • Irenaeus(evil makes us responsible) • Jesus (through Jesus, God is seen to be good, and evil is defeated)
