  2. What Influenza Is • Contagious respiratory illness • Mild-severe illness, possibly death

  3. Distribution • Infected people can spread it up to 6 feet away by sneezing, talking, etc. • Spread by droplets • Droplets can land in or on others

  4. How It's Controlled • Best way: get vaccinated every year • Wash hands

  5. Social Factors • It affects you by leading to school absences, & complications such as hospitalization and other aspects of everyday life.

  6. Economic Factors • Flu shots usually cost from $5 to $30 • Health insurance plans cover flu shots • Stores offer limited discounts of $5 • It costs 70 to 166 million each year for the US.

  7. Environmental Factors • Migratory birds play a part in spreading the disease throughout Asia & possibly the world.

  8. Spread from other species • Different subtypes (H3N2, H2N2, H1N1, & H1N1) infect different species
