  1. BY: Gabby Tarantino Math Vocabulary PowerPoint

  2. Integer A member of the set of positive whole numbers {1, 2, 3, . . . }, negative whole numbers {-1, -2, -3, . . . }, and zero {0}.

  3. perfect square An integer that is the square of an integer.

  4. irrational number Any real number that cannot be expressed as a ratio between two integers.

  5. real numbers A number that is rational or irrational, not imaginary.

  6. Density Property The density property tells us that we can always find another real number that lies between any two real numbers. For example, between 5.61 and 5.62, there is 5.611, 5.612, 5.613 and so forth. Between 5.612 and 5.613, there is 5.6121, 5.6122 ... and an endless list of other numbers!

  7. Adjacent angles two angles that have the same vertex and a side in common

  8. Coefficient A number or symbol multiplied with a variable or an unknown quantity in an algebraic term, as 4 in the term 4x, or x in the term x(a + b).

  9. Distance Formula The extent of space between two objects or places; an intervening space.

  10. Domain To give the domain and the range, I just list the values without duplication: domain:  {2, 3, 4, 6} range:  {–3, –1, 3, 6}

  11. Hypotenuse The side of a right triangle opposite the right angle

  12. Legs of a right Triangle In a right triangle, the sides opposite to the acute angles are called the Legs of a Triangle.

  13. Rational Number A number capable of being expressed as an integer or a quotient of integers, excluding zero as a denominator

  14. Range The area or sphere in which an activity takes place.

  15. Slope To diverge from the vertical or horizontal; incline: a roof that slopes. See Synonyms at slant. To move on a slant; ascend or descend: sloped down the trail.

  16. Scientific Notation A method of writing or displaying numbers in terms of a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. The scientific notation of 10,492, for example, is 1.0492 × 104.

  17. Prism A solid figure whose bases or ends have the same size and shape and are parallel to one another, and each of whose sides is a parallelogram.

  18. Scatter plot (Mathematics & Measurements / Statistics) Statistics a graph that plots along two axes at right angles to each other the relationship between two variable quantities, such as height and weight

  19. Slope intercept form An algebraic equation, such as y = 2x + 7 or 3x + 2y - z = 4, in which the highest degree term in the variable or variables is of the first degree. The graph of such an equation is a straight line if there are two variables.
