  2. THE BLACK DEATH • In 1349 in the summer 30% of Cork’s population died • They died from a bacteria carried by fleas on rats

  3. The burning of Cork took place during the Irish War of Independence • 2000 people were left jobless and many were homeless • Over 40 business premises and 300 residential properties had been destroyed Cork burns down in 1920

  4. Something Spooky • Cork City is built on mass graves • 1847 during the famine, Cork ran out of grave yards so they had to dig mass graves • Bishop Lucy Park in city centre is one area where there are 800+ skeletons underneath the ground

  6. 2nd Largest Port in the World • The second largest natural harbour behind Sydney, Australia • Oldest yacht club in the world founded in 1720 • The first motorboat race in the world took place in place in 1903 The Harnsworth Cup • The first steam ship went across the Atlantic from Cobh 1838 it took 18days • The Titanic left Cobh on last voyage

  7. Cork Invented Steeple Chasing • In 1752 a member of the Duhallow Hunt Club challenged his neighbour to run from the church steeple at Buttevant to the church steeple at Doneraile

  8. Cork’s Claim To Fame • A Cork woman owns a piece of the moon - Agnes Mary Clerk was an astronomer that was so good at her job NASA named a crater after her it is called the Clerke crater • Ford Cars opened their first plant outside the US in Cork • Dunnes Stores set up in Cork
