  6. Machining Basics • http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~robo2005/machineTut.htm • Primary Machining for Piston Project: • Lathe • Milling Machine • CNC Machine • Primary Machining for Final Project: • Laser Cutter

  7. Lathe Basics • Purpose: To rotate a part against a tool whose position it controls • Useful for fabricating parts and/or features that have a circular cross section

  8. Lathe Basics Lathe Chuck • Spindle: Part of lathe that rotates • Workholding attachments held in spindle - three jaw chucks, collets, and centers Spindle Spindle Rotation Forward/Reverse Main Power On/Off Spindle Speed

  9. Lathe Basics • Tailstock: supports end of the workpiece, or hold tools for drilling, reaming, threading, or cutting tapers. • Carriage: controls and supports the cutting tool • Saddle: mates with and slides along the ways. • Cross slide: controls transverse motion of the tool • A tool compound that allows angular tool movement. Quick Change Tool Holder y (Axis of rotation) x Tailstock Move the SADDLE along the y-axis Move the CROSS SLIDE along the X-axis
