  1. An alert for drowsy or sleepy drivers Professional and Academic skills Semester l 2020/21 Presented by: Lojin Fares Jawad GCET ID: 201911156 Module leader: Dr. Ahmad Hosseini

  2. What is the problem? • Today in the world, approximately 1 in 5 fatalities on the road are caused by drowsy drivers. • According to World Health Organization (WHO), road injury consider from the top 10 global causes of deaths. • Fatigue took 10% of death causes. • Road traffic deaths ---< 1.35 million • Drowsy drivers are a very common problem and too risky. Everyone should try their best to solve this issue.

  3. This simple mind map shows what I’m going to present in the next minutes.

  4. Causes of deaths around the world

  5. Road injury considered as the top 8 death cause. Unfortunately, people now become reckless and not interested in people safety. This category of people should be judged for their disregard for people’s lives.

  6. Devices to help drowsy drivers

  7. Eye sensor Smart Eye Automotive Solutions is market leading in Driver Monitoring System (DMS) and Interior Sensing algorithms for integration in vehicles. Certain eye movements can reveal whether the driver is sleepy, enabling the car to warn the driver and, if needed, stop the car. Increased use of mobile phones while driving has made a lack of attentiveness more common, creating the need for a digital AI backup driver to minimize the risk of accidents.

  8. Heart rate device Steer uses two different sensors to detect changes in heart rate and sweat secretion, biometrics that signal when someone is getting drowsy. When the device is first put on it records the wearer’s heart rate and skin conductance level. If a wearer’s heart rate lowers by ten beats per minute and skin conductance by one unit from baseline, the device gives a slight vibration. When skin conductance decreases by another unit and heart rate falls by three more beats, Steer delivers a gentle shock.

  9. Coffee reminder Nissan's Driver Attention Alert system is intended to address potential driver fatigue and inattention. The system adapts to each individual driver, monitoring steering input patterns (using steering angle sensors) during a period of driving to establish a baseline. It continuously compares subsequent driving patterns to a baseline using a statistical analysis of steering correction errors. If it detects driving behavior consistent with a drowsy driver, the system uses an audible chime sound and displays an amber coffee cup with a message reading, "Take a break?" in the vehicle's information display.

  10. Advantages and Disadvantages Of course, every single thing have its advantages and disadvantages. And for the alert in the car, there are several issues that might face the companies and people, which I’m going to discuss some of them now.

  11. The Advantages

  12. 1. Decrease deaths: Using these new technology of course will decrease the number of deaths annually. It will reduce the property accruing of accidents. 2. According to the first point, it will also reduce the road injuries that causes by the drivers. 3. Decrease near misses. (as it shown in the picture)

  13. 4. Safe money for maintenance: If you owned these devices, you will avoid as much as accidents you can. In that way, you will safe your money for something better. 5. Safe money for insurances: You are no longer need to subscribe for the most expensive insurance package. 6. Last thing is increase safe classification of roads in certain locations, and this will come back to the country with good reputation.

  14. The disadvantages

  15. Examples about the companies • Nissan have created the Coffee reminder pop-up notification. • For the Eye sensor technique, it has been invented by some automotive OEMs and suppliers. • For the third one, unfortunately no information available for its creator.

  16. New technology to be used in the car: It will be new to most of the drivers, and they have to get used to it by time. Also, the old style drivers resistances for the new technology generally. The government and companies should convince people to use it for their safety. • More expensive: Any new technology will cost more, this is a normal thing. And also, the insurances companies will ask for more money. • Also, for the new technology, the cars must be in a high performance to run the tech correctly and in a perfect way.

  17. Feedback By asking a group of people about these solutions, the results come positive and agreeing that everyone should have these techniques in their car. It will reduce the death number causes by road injury, and the road will be safe for everyone.
