  2. Prepositional Phrases • Group of words that begins with a preposition and usually ends with a noun or pronoun, called the object of the preposition. • I will meet you at the movie. • Prep. Phrases might occur in a series and may have more than one object. • My skis sped down the hill over the cliff into the river. • We sent invitations to Jack, Ken, and Renee.

  4. Functions of Prep. Phrases • Can function as an adjective or an adverb in a sentence. • ADJECTIVES – Modify nouns and pronouns • ADVERBS – Modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs

  5. Adjective phrases • Describe a noun or pronoun. • Answer the questions: • Which one? • What kind? • How many? • The man with the beard is my dad. • I bought a chest for my tools.

  6. Adverb phrases • Modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. • Answer the questions: • How? • Where? • Why? • When? • To what extent? • Adverbs are movable!

  7. Adverb phrases • She overcame evil with kindness. • I jumped into the water. • For many years, I was afraid to talk. • During the summer, the rainfall was heavy.

Rules for prep. phrases • Prep Phrase at the beginning of the sentence (introductory clause) • Automatically Adverb • Phrase follows the subject • Automatically Adjective • Phrase follows the verb, adjective, or adverb • Automatically Adverb • If it can be moved, it is an ADVERB. ADJECTIVE phrases cannot move.
