  1. What you need to do – before and during the induction course

  2. Learning Statement – Sept 4th A short essay (1 page) on the topic of ‘Learning and Studying at University’. This is a view of your thoughts about teaching and learning in Higher Education – in particular in your subject area. It is intended to be your perceptions and so does not have to be a heavily referenced document. This is to submitted to the RIEL office before Sept 4th. You will need to bring 5 copies of this statement with you – one for the tutors, three for other tHE participants to review your statement and one for yourself. You shall have the opportunity to discuss yours and other people’s statements as part of a session. Any feedback that you receive should be recorded and included in your final tHE portfolio.

  3. On line preparation Sept 4th – Sept 15th Before attending the face to face induction you will be asked to take part in some tasks so that you are fully prepared for the course. These tasks will be online and will involve some reading, discussion between yourself and other new tHE participants, and some personal reflection. It will not be possible to complete the tasks by logging-on on the last day, you will need to log on at least once in each the two weeks prior to the course. You shall receive an e mail to remind you of this element of the course and to let you know how to find/log on to the area we shall be using.

  4. Presentation – Sept 18th Each participant will make a 10 minute presentation this will be based on a topic within your own subject area that you find interesting. These presentation will take place to small groups on the first afternoon. A data projector, laptop, flipcharts and OHP will all be available and it is up to the individual as to what resources they chose to use – it is as perfectly acceptable to stand and talk through an experience without visual aids as it is to bring a pre-prepared powerpoint presentation. Once again feedback will be given at the end of each presentation. You will be given the opportunity to decide as a group what you would like to receive feedback about and will be asked to complete observation forms for each of the presentations you see. This feedback should be recorded and included with a personal commentary in your final tHE portfolio.

  5. Poster – Sept 20th You do not have to prepare this in advance. On the final day each participant will display an A1 (flipchart) size poster outlining a proposed teaching innovation/cycle. This will be an action plan of what you are going to do next. It should include: - present teaching situation including reasons for development - teaching innovation supported by theoretical underpinnings - evaluation method These posters will be discussed as a group and once again amendments and feedback should be recorded for inclusion in your final portfolio.
