  14. JTC After the panel review process the NRF will present the panel recommendations to the Joint Technical Committee (JTC) meeting between NRF and the partner country. The JTC compares and discusses the recommendations from both countries and approve proposals to be considered for funding.

International Council for Science South Africa is a founder member of the International Council for Science (formerly called the International Council of Scientific Unions) which was established in 1931 to promote international scientific activity in the different branches of science and their applications for the benefit of humanity

Extended Purpose Statement • The goal is to promote effective South African involvement in the organisations of the ICSU family. • South Africa is also a national member, via the NRF, of 20 of the 25 full ICSU Unions, many of which predate the creation of ICSU, as well as of a number of the ICSU Associates.

Extended purpose statement • The SA ICSU Secretariat is involved in the activities of some of the interdisciplinary bodies created by ICSU to undertake research programmes of interest to several of its member bodies. • Examples of such activities include Antarctic, oceanic, space and water research, problems of the environment, genetic experimentation, solar-terrestrial physics and biotechnology.

  22. Extended purpose statement • The SA ICSU Secretariat provides secretarial & administrative services for the ICSU National Board of SA, 33 National Committees and an average of 30 meetings (incl. workshops & teleconferences) all held annually. • The total membership of these committees is in excess of 270 members.

  23. Extended purpose statement • About 200 South Africans serve on ICSU-related commissions, working groups and executive positions. An average of 40 South Africans receive financial support from the SA ICSU Secretariat to attend General Assemblies, conferences congresses each year.
