  2. Land of the Dead • Ruled by Hades and Persephone • 2 Divisions of the Underworld • TARTARUS: deeper region & prison of Titans • EREBUS: where the dead pass as soon as they die • Terms UNDERWORLD, HADES, and TARTARUS are used in different myths to designate the Land of the Dead

  3. Rivers in the Underworld • ACHERON: River of Woe; pours into • COCYTUS: River of Lamentation • Rivers that separate Underworld from the land above: • PHLEGETHON: River of Fire • STYX: River of Unbreakable Oaths (by which the gods swear) • LETHE: River of Forgetfulness

CHARACTERS of the UNDERWORLD • CHARON: • Aged boatman who ferries souls of the dead across the River STYX to the gates of TARTARUS • Only receives into his boat the souls whose passage money was placed upon their lips at death and were properly buried • CERBERUS: • 3-headed dog with a dragon’s tail • Guards the gate and permits all souls to enter but NONE to leave

CHARACTERS of the UNDERWORLD • 3 JUDGES: • Rhadamanthus, Minos, & Aeacus • Judge souls upon their arrival—”wicked” go to torment & “good” go to ELYSIAN FIELDS • 3 ERINYES (FURIES): • Tisiphone, Megaera, & Alecto • Punish “evil-doers” • SLEEP & his brother DEATH: send both true and false dreams to men above
