  5. Concussions • A clinical syndrome characterized by immediate post-traumatic impairment of neural functions • Disturbs normal brain function • Occur as a result of a direct blow or sudden snapping of the head forward, backward, or rotating side to side

  6. Signs and Symptoms • Be aware of • Easily seen signs • Self-reported symptoms • Delayed symptoms

  7. Signs • Appears dazed • Confused • Forgetful • Unsure • Clumsy • Answers questions slowly • Loses consciousness • Behavior or personality changes • Retrograde amnesia • Anterograde amnesia

  8. Symptoms • Headache • Nausea • Balance problems • Dizziness • Double or blurry vision • Sensitive to light or sound • Sluggish • Foggy • Changes in sleep pattern • Difficulty concentrating or remembering

  9. 1 or more S/S = • CONCUSSION

  10. What can we do? • Monitor equipment and technique • Be thorough in your evaluation • Recognize injury severity • Collaborate with physician on return to play decisions • Understand the potential negative consequences of concussions
