Quell • to put a stop to something like a riot, argument, feelings, or a certain behavior. • Ex: The coach’s encouraging words quelled the players’ nerves before the game. • Ex: The presence of the soldiers quelled the violent crowd outside Central High School.
Segregation • separation of one group from another, especially races
Apprehension • fear or dread of something that might happen
Ominous • Giving the impression that something sinister or unpleasant is going to happen. • Threatening
Integration • mixing or joining together of different groups • Opposite of segregation
Incite • To encourage, stimulate, or cause an action • Ex: Warning the passengers that the plane is going to crash will only incite panic.
Accosted • Attacked – can be physical or verbal
Bigotry • prejudice, racism, intolerance, bias, narrow mindedness, chauvinism
Precedent • An earlier event or action seen as an example or guide to be considered in later similar circumstances. • Ex: Mrs. Ginder’s students had set a precedent of being respectful and responsible, so the teacher felt comfortable planning activities that required maturity.
