  2. When did this happen? • Piloted in June 2000 • Chicago, DeKalb, Indian Prairie and Rockford School Districts were integral in piloting the program

  3. Why Does Early Childhood Need Standards • Continuous throughout education • Allow for similarity in learning • Allows for consistency in testing

  4. Uniformity is Key • Illinois Early Learning Standards are set up in the same fashion as the Learning standards are for children through grade 12 in Illinois.

  5. Standards cover all major areas of the early childhood child’s needs • Social, Emotional development • Language Arts • Math • Social Science • Science • Physical Development and health • Fine Arts • Foreign Language

  6. “Standards are an essential first step for designing effective preschool curricula since they represent an agreed upon agenda for teaching and learning. The IELA… recognize the interconnectedness of social, emotional, cognitive and physical development” Barbara Bowman

  7. Guiding Principals: Developmental Domains • Domains effect each other • All domains must be looked at collectively • Standards and benchmarks can be cited in more than one domain

  8. Beliefs that the Standards Imply • Young children are capable and competent • They develop at different rates • They will exhibit a range of skills and competencies • They learn through active exploration of their environment

  9. The Goal of Standards • Provide teachers and caregivers with the proper information needed • Allows all schools and Early Childhood Programs to have a clear and consistant focus

  10. How do you use the Standards with Early Childhood Special Education? • Look for the most basic underlying point of the benchmark • Break the benchmark down into a few individual pieces that can be formed into specific goals for a certain child • Remember that the child needs to work toward these standards, he or she will not always meet the exact standard.

  11. Demonstrate knowledge and use of numbers and their representations in a broad range of theoretical and practical settings Rote counting Counting children in class Passing out supplies ( 1 to 1 correspondence) How many “one more” “just one” Math Standard A

  12. Time Consuming?YesWorthwhile?YES • Change is hard… but change almost always works out for the better • Pilot programs showed a much more consistent amount of learning across programs in the state • Makes teachers accountable

  13. Further Information about Early Childhood Learning Standards ISBE has the most information on the standards as well as the most in depth and current articles and data to back up their work with the piloting of the standards www.isbe.state.il.us

  14. More Sites There are many sights that have a small amount of information about the standards, the ones that I am giving have lots of ideas and themes that are alligned to specific goals and benchmarks • www.edupuppy.com • www.naeyc.org • www.dec-sped.org
