  3. Introduction to UnitSecond Grade The goal of this unit is to enable the students to become more familiar with some of the people that have made a difference in our country. This unit will be completed during the month of February. This unit will take place in the classroom for around two week.

  4. Content The famous people covered in this unit include: -George Washington -Harriet Tubman -Abraham Lincoln -Thomas Edison -Martin Luther King, Jr.

  5. Objectives • Students will identify the people discussed in the unit. • Students will identify why each person in the unit is famous. • Students will relate to their lives the accomplishments of the famous people.

  6. Objectives • Students will understand the contributions of the famous people to the country. • Students will utilize a variety of resources to consider information from a number of events. • Students will use writing as a tool for learning and thinking across the curriculum.

  7. Day One George Washington Introduction -The teacher will brainstorm with the students their prior knowledge of George Washington. Development -Read the book, The Adventures of George Washington. -Using a pocket chart create a timeline of George Washington’s life.

  8. Day One George Washington • Culminating Activity -The student’s will create their own George Washington. Click Pictures to return to Table of Contents

  9. Day TwoHarriet Tubman • Introduction -The teacher will brainstorm with the students their prior knowledge of Harriet Tubman. • Development -The students will watch An Animated Hero Classics of Harriet Tubman (Video). -Group discussion about the video

  10. Day TwoHarriet Tubman • Culminating Activity -Map out the routes of Harriet Tubman

  11. Day ThreeAbraham Lincoln • Introduction - The teacher will brainstorm with the students their prior knowledge of Abraham Lincoln. • Development -Read the book, Abe Lincoln’s Hat -Take a virtual tour of Abraham Lincoln’s House (www.nps.gov/liho/home/home.htm)

  12. Day ThreeAbraham Lincoln • Culminating Activity -The students will create an illustrated timeline of Abraham Lincoln’s Life.

  13. Day FourThomas Edison • Introduction -The teacher will brainstorm with the students their prior knowledge of Thomas Edison. • Development -An Animated Hero Classics of Thomas Edison (Video) -Group discussion about the video

  14. Day FourThomas Edison • Culminating Activity -The students will conduct an experiment which involves lighting a bulb.

  15. Day Five Martin Luther King, Jr. • Introduction - The teacher will brainstorm with the students their prior knowledge of Martin Luther King, Jr. • Development -Read the book, Thank you, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! -Student will listen to Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech at http://www.webcorp.com/civilrights/mlkfr.htm and complete the “I have a dream” worksheet.

  16. Day Five Martin Luther King, Jr. • Culminating Activity -Student will write a thank you letter to Martin Luther King, Jr. -The teacher will send the letters to The King Center in Georgia.

Jigsaw Evaluation • Students will be assigned to groups of 5 students. • Each student will get one of the five short biographies previously prepared by the teacher of the five famous people previously discussed. The biographies will be of George Washington, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

  18. Jigsaw Evaluation • Each student will read the assigned material of their famous person. Each student then prepares a “Can Biography” of their person’s life and accomplishments. • Remember that this is a verbal summary or overview and a written paper.
