  1. Mediterranean Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CMIMA-CSIC) Barcelona Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM) Marine Biology Physical Oceanography Marine Geology Fisheries Marine Technology Unit (UTM) Technological Development Oceanographic Services http://www.cmima.csic.es MAMA contact: Jordi Font (ICM) jfont@icm.csic.es

  2. ICM activities related to MAMA objectives • Mediterranean monitoring projects: • Catalan coast water quality survey (75 points, 1993-present, weekly/monthly) • L’Estartit hydrographic survey (1970-present, weekly) • Medes islands Natural Reserve biological monitoring (1991-present, yearly) • Barcelona Marine Station (project under development) • Monitoring systems: • Multi-camera video system for coastal monitoring (Argus) http://argus.cmima.csic.es/ • HRPT satellite receiving station (temperature, colour) http://pro-sat.cmima.csic.es/ • Tools development: • Harmful Algal Blooms Expert System (HABES, FP5) • New strategy of monitoring and management of HABs in the Med. (STRATEGY, FP5) • Objective analysis of hydrographic fields from profiling floats (GYROSCOPE, FP5) • Graphics tools to access, visualise and manage data through Internet (AVG-ION, E) • Structures analysis methods in remote sensing fields (IMAGEN, E) • Light GPS buoys for precise sea level measurements at open sea (GRAC, E-ESA) • Moored buoy for near-surface temperature and salinity measurements (WISE, ESA)

  3. Monitoring tools at ICM

  4. MAMA challenges and expected problemsWP2 MAMA-OBS, Observing SystemTask 2.5 Evaluation of the Near Real Time Satellite DataEfficient access to all partners Authorisation to distribute SeaWiFS data Availability of processed altimeter data To really have NRT products !!!  to use experience from MFSPP

  5. MAMA value added Different from previous European Mediterranean projects Real basin wide dimension (never seen ALL riparian countries before) Environment for future cooperations (do we really want to study and understand the whole Mediterranean system?) Demonstration that we can easily offer information (power of MAMA-NET) Take advantadge of training in complementary fields Support for the development of exchange (Internet) tools Help in viewing the MedGOOS and users perspective
