  1. Mobilization • raising a group of people who shares certain characteristics for the purpose of fighting for a common cause

  2. Social mobilization • Mobilization of civilian population as part of the contentious politics • most often associated with movements of protest or other social movements aiming for social change • commonly considered typical features of modern societies, but also exist in traditional societies

  3. Since the 1970s, part-taking in social mobilisation are increasingly considered rational actions, and as a natural part of political life.

  4. Basic components needed for social mobilization: • a sufficient number of people should be disposed for the cause • an event or development should set the mobilisation in motion • mobilization should be practically possible • most processes of mobilisation have some kind of leadership • the process should have sufficient resources

  5. Theories of mobilization: • Resource mobilization theory: rational choice, focus on leadership, strategies and resources • New social movement theories: more emphasis on identity, culture, lifestyle

  6. Neila Kabeer on mobilization for women’s empowerment: • Two kinds of agency: effective and transformative • Effective agency is individual, private and personalised and cannot result in structural or institutional change • Transformative agency is effective agency mobilized into the collective, public, and politizised spheres. May transform social structures and institutions.
