At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to explain… • How educators can gather and analyze data that is useful for school improvement • How educators can use available data to plan school improvement • What data PED requires from schools and districts, and how it is to be submitted NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  3. Rate Yourself: Dataphobe or Data Diva/Dude? NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  4. The Challenge “Educators have historically relied less on data to guide their practice than on intuition, teaching philosophy, or personal experiences.” -- Cromley, A. Data Helps Us Focus… • “Data should be an essential feature of how schools do business.'‘ • "If we collectively focus on goals and regularly measure the impact of the methods..., then we will get better results'‘ • Mike Schmoker, Results,: The Key to Continuous School Improvement NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  9. Student-centered Data • Demographic Data – Who are the students? • Enrollment, Attendance, Ethnicity • Achievement Data – What do they know? • Standardized Tests, Teacher Observations • Program Data – What are we doing to help them learn? • School Programs and Processes • Perception Data – What do they perceive about the learning environment? • Learning Environment, Values and Beliefs, Attitudes and Observation NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  10. Data and School Improvement • To be a driving force for school improvement, data must be: • … clearly relevant to the people using it. • … reduced or transformed to become clear “information”. • … trustworthy! NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  11. How Can Data Be Used For Improvement? • Monitor student progress • Judge the efficacy of curriculum and instructional practices • Communicate NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  12. Assessment Data NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  13. Administrative Considerations • Decide which tests and assessments are truly necessary • Involve teachers in efforts to develop assessment practices, align with state standards and benchmarks, and track student progress over time. • Allocate more time for teachers to analyze and reflect on student data, plan revisions, and receive in-services. NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  14. Remember… Data is just numbers until you do something with it. NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  15. Using Data in the Classroom • Monitor student progress • Identify areas of weakness in time to do something about it • Engage students in the evaluation of their own progress NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  20. A Data Plan Collect basic information Identify additional data Disaggregate the data Analyze the data Summarize the data Brainstorm the causes Collect more data Analyze and summarize data Identify a goal Repeat the process

  21. Collect the data • What data you collect depends on what you are trying to do with it. • Is the data for student feedback? • Is the data for program evaluation? • Is the data to measure program implementation? • Is the data to be used to inform classroom instruction? NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  22. Study the data • Disaggregate • Analyze • Summarize NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  23. Brainstorm and Collect More Data… • “What factors contribute to…” • Acknowledge factors over which you have no control • Focus on the factors over which you have influence and are willing to address • Gather more data if necessary to confirm your ideas NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  24. Identify a Goal and a Plan • Steps that will be taken • Persons responsible • Additional persons involved • Resources needed • Time required and a schedule • Indicators that will be monitored NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  38. Part 1. SYSTEMS ALIGNMENT ACTION STEPS Purpose: To examine the organizational structures and processes of the school to ensure student success. The Public Education Diagnostic Assessment Team and the School Leadership Team identified the following initiatives needed to further develop the organizational capacity of the school. 40. DAR Implementation Review Part 2. SHORT CYCLE ASSESSMENTS A. DATA PROFILE Purpose: Multiple Up-To-Date Measures are used to assess student progress and inform instructional delivery. Assessments must be aligned to NM Content Standards and Benchmarks. Short Cycle Assessment Data Profile: The Star Reading and Math Assessment was administered in grades 6-8 for the school year 2005-06. The numerals within the cells represent grade equivalency. The Compass Learning ( CL) Assessment was administered in grades 6-8 for the school year 2005-06. The numerals within the cells represent mean of per cent correct. The Target Teach (TT) math assessment was administered in grades 6-8 for the school year 2005-06. The numerals within the cells represent mean of student proficiency scores. The EduTest (ET) Reading Assessment was administered in grades 6-8 for the school year 2005-06. The numerals within the cells represent mean percent correct. NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  41. DAR Implementation Review B. SUMMARY Summary of Short Cycle Assessment Data: The assessment data does not show the growth the school would like to see. The number of assessments administered may be contributing to students losing active interest in doing well on the assessments. The school intends to examine this issue. It is also possible that the amount of time required for testing impacts negatively on instructional time and the availability of computers for instruction. NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau

  42. Activity You will find a copy of your school’s Accountability Report in your folder… • Examine your data • Develop a focus area • Brainstorm several strategies • What is your next step? NM Public Education Department Priority Schools Bureau
