Sighthill Campus To have low carbon emissions and effective energy performance: Minimising heat loss through the building and windows Using natural daylight to encourage economical use of artificial lighting Preventing overheating in the summer through the use of shading Making effective use of natural ventilation Improving the energy efficiency of amenities and equipment. Sighthill computer provision Up to 600 wired staff and student Windows desktop workstations required Developing a remote Windows desktop provisioning service to be accessed via energy efficient / low heat output computer devices. Enables remote connection to: Blade PCs Desktop PCs Virtualised PCs

Advantages of desktop (PC) virtualisation Efficient centralised monitoring, provisioning, power up / down Can use energy efficient devices for remote desktop access Cooling / energy reuse can be efficiently controlled within data centre Economy of scale not all users may require all the resources provided by a standard desktop PC (e.g. 250GB hard disk, 2GB or RAM) - could be wasteful unless different PC specifications are ordered as required instead, virtualised desktop resources can be centrally allocated on a needs basis to different user groups e.g. 2GB RAM for power users, 512MB RAM for task workers

    8. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) VDI required in order to centrally provision virtual desktops to remote devices Three main VDI solution vendors were considered Microsoft APP-V Citrix XenDesktop Vmware View

VDI Performed a Proof of Concept comparing Citrix XenDesktop 3 with VMware View 3 Chose VMware View 3 Familiarity (using VMware for Server Virtualisation / OPs VCentre monitoring) Easier to use (two management consoles rather than five) Linked clone technology reducing data centre disk requirements by up to 70% Licensing model (View - per concurrent user, XenDesktop (v4) - per named user) Inclusion of ThinApp with View 3 Premier license simpler than Cirtix XenApp Expectation of vShpere & View 4 release by Q4 2009 with improved reliability and performance (e.g. Software implementation of PCoIP)

Accessing VDI desktops Windows, Linux or Mac OSX desktop / laptop computer (via installed View Windows Client or IE View Portal Java plug-in) Allows staff and students to connect to standard University desktop from any non-University imaged computer, anywhere with a network connection e.g. Student halls of residence, Student loan laptop, Internet Cafe Re-provisioned desktop PC Old desktop PCs can be adapted to connect to VDI only, possibly PXE boot without hard disk, thus saving some energy / costs but still quite power hungry Thin-Client devices / Zero-Client devices (PCoIP) Energy efficient Mobile devices (e.g. Wyse Pocket Cloud for iPhone)

Thin-Client Devices Advantages No moving parts higher reliability Lower power consumption than traditional PCs PC consumption up to 80 Watts, Thin-Client consumption up to 20 Watts Longer life span Student PC renewal cycle every 4 years, Thin-Client up to 7 years? No desktop service OS no annual student re-imaging required plug and play

Thin Client Devices Considerations Local OS may still require AV / patching / maintenance e.g. Win XPe Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) required many servers/disks Require resilient, reliable well designed network and data centre required to some extent for desktop PC service in any case? Double IP addresses required one per Thin-Client device + one per VM PC Answer - use internal IPs for Thin-clients (as for IPT devices) Protocol RDP (Microsoft) (6.1 now supports both 32-bit color and font smoothing) ICA (Citrix) ALP (Sun Ray) PcOIP (Terradichi / VMware View 4)

    17. Thin-Client Device Examples Wyse C, V and R class OS can be ThinOS, WinXPe, WinCE, Linux or Zero HP t51xx, t55xx, t57xx OS can be ThinPro, WinXPe, WinCE or Linux HP t5730 was used extensively at VMworld 09

Desktop PC green procedures Currently All standard desktop service PC monitors go to standby after 20mins inactivity Attempt power down of idle student PC base units every hour from 21:00 - 06:00 Power up all student PC base units between 08:00 and 08:45 so immediately available for tutorial logons during core hours Flag to leave on overnight if WSUS updates been approved apply at 03:00 Future Consider earlier student power downs e.g. from 18:00 Consider hibernating base units during the daytime after n minutes idle need to ensure can be reliably and quickly woken up again. Extend PC base unit power downs to staff PCs also need to ensure staff can request base unit kept on if required e.g. nocturnal processing.
