  2. John Adams wins 71 electoral votes to T.J.’s 68! • Constitution states that the runner up will be vice president! • Uh oh….. • *****Country has a Federalist President and a Democratic Republican Vice President! ****

  3. Problems with France • France was seizing American ships to prevent them from trading with Britain. • Seized over 300 American ships. • Some wanted war, Adams wanted to talk things out.

  4. XYZ Affair • Adams sent over three American representatives to meet with the French foreign minister. • The 3 French agents, referred to as X,Y,Z took the Americans aside and told them that they would only talk if America loaned France $10 million dollars and gave the foreign minister $250, 000.

  5. Adams refused…. • And in 1798 Congress cancelled treaties with France and allowed U.S. ships to seize French ships. • Congress also expanded the army and navy.
